Oh, What an Awful Thing to Say!: Needles, Skewers, Pricks, and Outright Nastiness
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (February, 1992)
Authors: William Cole and Louis Phillips
Average review score:

Prime Insults
This small book is a treasure of insults, ranging frm unkind words about Dorothy Parker to downright meanness regarding Warren G. Harding, with splendid stops along the way.
Here are insults the reader will want to read or send to friends, and perhaps to enemies. This is a book to browse through for quite some time after reading it, probably in a single sitting, because it's a fascinating page-turner, not for plot, but for wicked words.

On Flirtation
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (March, 1996)
Author: Adam Phillips
Average review score:

A brilliant essayist on a variety of topics
Do not be misled by the use of the word "flirtation" in this collection's title. It's a metaphor for flexibility and psychic and intellectual playfulness. In his Preface, the author asserts, "Flirtation keeps things in play, and by doing so lets us get to know them in different ways." Phillips, a British child analyst and respected literary critic, has assembled a series of readable, erudite, and sometimes thrilling essays on his customary favorite topics. They are fresh and insightful - as usual from him. He is interested in literature, contemporary and traditional psychoanalytic theory, attachment, depression, the uses and wonders of language, Lacanian musings and principles, and much more. The bibliography itself could form the backbone of a lengthy course of study. The collection is divided into several parts: "The Uses of the Past," "Psychoanalysis Revisited," and "Writing Outside," which includes literary essays on Philip Roth, Isaac Rosenberg, nineteenth century writer John Clare, and Hapsburg Empire-era Austrian Karl Kraus. But it his the essays on, or "flirting" with, a wide variety of psychoanalytic themes which are at the heart of this interesting, intelligent, and useful collection. "Freud and the Uses of Forgetting," "On Love," and "The Telling of Selves" reveal Phillips' ability to range widely - yet with focus, inherent compassion and kindness, and clarity - in the telling of his themes.

An essay on depression, in which he talks with great respect about the work of Lacanian analyst Julie Kristeva, is particularly interesting. Erich Fromm, Freud and his biographer, Jones, are also subjects of essays.

This is a terrific book, full of humane and productive thinking, and ought to be read and reread by anyone with an interest in the uses of psychoanalysis, and the very modern, creative, and original mind of Adam Phillips. Highly recommended.

Only the Wicked: An Ivan Monk Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Write Way Publishing (November, 2000)
Author: Gary Phillips
Average review score:

A rich deep mystery
In Los Angeles' Abyssinia barbershop, Marshall Spears is the oldest of the regulars who meet there. When he becomes excited over a radio interview of former Negro League baseball player, Kennesaw Riles, Ivan Monk takes notice especially since the interviewee is a relative. However, everyone in the shop that day takes notice when Marshall suddenly drops dead.

Monk and his associates try to do the right thing for Marshall, but are amazed to learn that he was a former baseball player. At his funeral, several of his old teammates including Kennesaw arrive to pay their respects. A few days later, Kennesaw is dead and police officer Rogers believes someone murdered him because he died from taking too much dioxin. Since it appears that the culprit knew the victim, Rogers turns towards Monk's mother Nona who had the motive and the means. Nona, a nurse, never forgave Kennesaw for lying on the witness stand against a rising black politician. Monk, a private detective, begins to make inquiries into the death of his relative.

What makes the Monk mysteries magnificent is the rich characterizations that allow the audience an opportunity to deeply look inside an African-American community. Besides telling a fabulous investigative tale, Gary Phillips talent lies in his ability to bring home the needs, desires, and ambitions of that community through the real people he describes. The latest tale, ONLY THE WICKED, contains a superb story line that includes a well written sleuthing adventure and homage to the Negro Leagues with references to baseball players like the original Flash, Cool Papa Bell. As usual, Mr. Phillips provides fans with a great trash-talking novel.

Our Country, Our Culture: The Politics of Political Correctness
Published in Paperback by Partisan Review (January, 1995)
Authors: Edith Kurzweil and William Phillips
Average review score:

32 intelligent, instructive points of view
This book contains 32 short articles written by college professors and others on the very important subject of Political Correction. I found the articles and the facts and opinions expressed to be very readable and instructive. The subject is broader and more serious than I had previously thought. I learned a great deal. The book is easy to read and is presented so one can select each article at will, not necessarily in page order; the authors are presented in alphabetical order. It is a very good read.

Outlaws and Gunfighters of the Old West
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (March, 1995)
Author: Phillip W. Steele
Average review score:

Outlaws and Gunfighters Classic!
This book and accompanying music cassette are superb! I was intriqued to learn the true history of many famous old west outlaws from this great little book. Phillip W. Steele is informative and entertaining, letting the reader in on some of the juicy, little-known facts of legendaries Jesse James, John Westley Hardin, Billy the Kid, Belle Starr, and the Gunfight at the OK Corral. John D. LeVan's original songs written for this book-music cassette collection further tell the stories of these outlaws. LeVan's music is dynamic, solid-wall-western, with a beat and rhythm so pounding, the only thing to do is try to stay on your horse, hang on to the reins and wait for the ballads! John D. LeVan is surely destined to become huge in the music industry!

Painting & Decorating Boxes (Creative Finishes Series)
Published in Paperback by Writers Digest Books (July, 1997)
Author: Phillip C. Myer
Average review score:

A great idea book for decorating boxes!
An accessory box is just one of those must have items when decorating a room in your home. As an interior decorator, I am always searching for new ideas to decorate accessory boxes. The "what not" boxes are the perfect accent in decorating a room and this book showed me a broad variety of painting and decorating possiblities. I just loved the large format of the step by step photos and great visual pictures of supplies needed to execute the techniques. This book is ideal for any do-it yourself type decorator.
